Welcome y Bienvanidos to my wikispace!! My name is Ann White (or Annie if you please) and I am currently a student at Western Michigan University. In December 2010 I will graduate from the College of Education with a double major in Spanish and English and then I will be on my way to teaching a class of my own. I absolutely love both of these subject areas and one of my main goals as a future teacher is to pass that love for these subjects on to my students. I hope that I can inspire and guide my students to pursue learning in all areas of their lives, especially in Spanish and English.
I am an avid learner. I always jump at any opportunity to learn or try something new because I believe that learning is the key to a happy and successful life. After I learn something new I always want to pass my knowledge on to someone I know (or don't know), and this leads me to believe that I was destined to be a teacher.
I always do my best to keep an open mind and I do not judge others. I am a very easy going person and I can get along with anybody (except my brother when he picks on me). I see every day as a new opportunity to make the best out of life and to do everything that I can to lead a happy life and make others around me happy as well.
Here is a song by Dave Matthews Band that makes me happy. Enjoy . <3
Why Multicultural Literature is Important in ELA Classes

Unit Introduction and Class information:
The Motorcycle Diaries: A Journey Around South America
This unit plan will cover two weeks of class (ten days) in 90 minute class periods in a high school English class. The lessons are geared towards 11th -12th graders but may also be used with 10th graders. Also these lessons are designed to be used in a Chicago Public School with a high population of Hispanic students. The anchor text is written by and about an influential Hispanic man, and I think it is beneficial for students of this culture to learn about a strong male role model and learn how to pursue their dreams in the same way as him. This unit will require students to show their skills in reading, poetry, journal writing, discussion, and a few other areas as well. The anchor text for this unit is
The Motorcycle Diaries: Notes on a Latin American Journey,
by Ernesto Che Guevara.
This novel is a memoir by the famous Che Guevara that accounts an exciting two year journey he took across South America on a motor bike with friend Alberto Granado in the early 50’s. This unit is a way to show students a unique cultural perspective of a very influential Latino man, and help them see how great things can be done with very minimal resources. For this unit we will be focusing on the Latino culture, mainly in South America.
There will be many opportunities for discovery and discussion in this unit. One of the main purposes in this unit will be to learn about unique aspects in the Latino cultures while discovering new and exciting aspects of their own identity. Writing will be thoughtful and will have a tight knit connection to their lives, the way Guevara’s writing is directly linked to his life. In this unit students will also read a variety of poetry by Latino/a writers like Sandra Cisneros.
